Avalanche Level I
Boulder Mountaineering School

 

Level I course objectives:

  • Identify avalanche terrain and make route finding decisions
  • Identify weak and strong layers
  • Perform field test to learn snow stability/instability
  • Recognize weather, terrain and snowpack factors contributing to instability
  • Perform small group rescue
  • Perform fast and efficient transceiver rescue

The course consists of two evening lecture sessions and two all day field trips for a total of 24 hours of training. Please contact bmswinter@cmcboulder.org for questions about this course.

The field trip will be in a winter avalanche environment of intermediate backcountry terrain. All students will need to be prepared for standing around all day and staying warm. In addition, each student will need a beacon, shovel, snow shoes or skis/snowboard with skins. A few beacons will be available to use for the class.

Avalanche Level II
Boulder Mountaineering School

 

The AIARE 2 course is a 4-day program that provides backcountry leaders the opportunity to advance their avalanche knowledge and decision making skills. This course also includes the prerequisite components for the professional progression: the AIARE 3 certificate. AIARE 2 builds on the introductory avalanche mitigation model introduced in AIARE I and focuses even more on evaluating stability. The course consists of 40 hours of instruction including both class and field time.

Student Prerequisites:

Students must have the ability to travel in avalanche terrain. An AIARE 1 Course (strongly recommended) or equivalent training/experience is required. A winter of practical experience after the Level 1 course is recommended before taking the AIARE 2 course.

Additional Information: 

Participants will need to have advanced intermediate ski ability and travel capability in both backcountry and downhill environments .
