The Opportunity:

We are looking for an enthusiastic and passionate individual to provide an amazing experience for the whole CMC community from prospective members to members that have been with the CMC for decades. These individuals will be able to create fun, inspiring, and interactive events designed to provide an incredible experience and bring members together to connect with each other and have plentiful opportunities to engage further with the CMC overall.

In addition to providing the ongoing experiences noted above, this role will be responsible for some of the following which will be divided between this role and another Coordintaor on the team; help out with Member support/issue resolution, monthly/weekly membership analytics, external communications, some marketing/blog creation (with support from the Marketing team), and various other tasks that support the overall membership experience and move the team towards achieving the goals of the Membership department and organization as a whole.

This role will require some evenings, weekends, and likely some travel across the state of Colorado. We believe it is important to balance work life and personal space in order maintain a fresh, creative, and engaged team. We encourage and support flexible hours to achieve this result.

This team member must be well-organized. Communication skills, attention to detail, and an authentic enthusiasm for the CMC’s mission are critical and the primary path to success.  We believe in living the mission of the Club so, a passion for outdoor recreation and some area of mountain-craft are required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Membership Events and Experiences
    • Understand requirements for each experience
    • Plan and execute member events
    • Book venues and schedule speakers
    • Oversee event and experience happenings and act quickly to resolve problems
    • Evaluate experience’s success and work to continuously improve CMC offerings
    • Integrally involved in re-vamping our new/prospective member experience
  • Marketing/Blogs (with support from Marketing team)
    • Work to help promote publications as part of an effort to increase our e-commerce footprint
      • Create blog posts
      • E-mail promotions
      • Help with new book launches
    • General marketing for experiences through social, e-mail, and other creative means to promote
  • Membership Support
    • Provide customer service by answering phones, returning calls, responding to e-mails to resolve member issues and provide top notch customer service
    • Review current Member benefits and work with our Development team and partners to:
      • Identify and obtain new member benefits
      • Ensure listing of benefits is up to date
      • Effectively communicate benefits of Membership to our community
    • Monthly/Weekly reporting of membership progress towards department goals
      • Update weekly/monthly reporting for review by Membership team leadership and work with them to implement improvements or identify areas of concern
  • Note: this role, as defined here, is new and will evolve over time so this is not be a complete list of responsibilities. These responsibilities will be divided between the successful candidate and another member of the team based on best fit determined together with the team based on skills and interest.

Experience/Qualifications:

  • Bilingual Spanish speaking strongly preferred
  • Proficient in MS Office
  • Knowledge of Salesforce or interest in learning
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills
  • Experience in content creation, social media experience in a professional setting, or other marketing experience
  • Great writing skills with examples to be provided during the interview/application process

Compensation:

CMC will offer the successful candidate a competitive compensation and benefits package, comparable to a nonprofit our size. Salary range for this position is: $35,000-$45,000, however current budget allows for us to bring this position on between $35,000 and $40,000 to start.

About CMC Leadership:
The Colorado Mountain Club’s (CMC) volunteer led trips and instructor led classes are the heart of what makes CMC run. CMC offers more than 3,000 outings annually and has over 250 courses, classes, and schools that cover a wide variety of disciplines and are welcoming no matter your skill level. These are all run and led by hundreds of volunteers across the state and serve over 6,500 members statewide.
 
Position Summary
The CMC’s Trip Leader Support Coordinator (TLSC) is an important part of the long history of education at the CMC. CMC’s dedicated volunteer base is an amazing asset, and they rely on staff support to make their work and play easier and more fulfilling. This role supports about 250 volunteers across the state.
The TLSC also has a pivotal role in supporting CMC’s strategic plan that revolves around significantly expanding our program capacity by recruiting trip leaders, building leadership education, and reaching diverse audiences. The ideal candidate will have administrative and volunteer coordination experience, a good dose of humor and humility, as well as an interest in pursuing their own advancement in outdoor skills and leadership.
Reporting to the Chief Education Officer, the TLSC is responsible for supporting adult volunteer leaders in doing their best work for CMC members in the field. This position is fulltime in-person in Golden, CO.
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Work closely CMC’s Adult Education team and CMC Membership to recruit and support adult volunteer leaders.
Assist in elevating and modernizing adult education across CMC.
Support leaders in all aspects of leading trips from utilizing CMC online calendar, to mapping and categorizing trips, to recruiting participants from our membership.
Support leaders in training to complete all facets of leading including the Leader In Training (LIT) field exam and close work with our volunteer Trip Leader School Director.
Track administration of trip leader certificates and credentials in the membership database.
Communicate with Trip Leader School Director(s), leaders, and committees to answer questions, update protocols, and work with rosters. 
Streamline leadership qualifications and training between regional CMC groups.
Participate in discussions pertaining to leader (free trips) and instructor (paid CMC schools/classes) committees and questions regarding compliance with State CMC policies.
Assist in creating a more cohesive “ONE CMC” for all members, leaders, and instructors across Colorado.
 
Minimum Qualifications:
Minimum 2 years of experience in an outdoor education and/or volunteer support role.
Excellent customer service, proven organizational and administrative skills.
Experience leading and managing climbing, hiking, and outdoor education programs.
Experience guiding volunteers in outdoor settings and/or train-the-trainer models.
Personal interest and progression in outdoor sports and/or technical mountain activity.
Must pass background check.
 
Required Competencies:
Volunteer Support and Communication
  o Proven ability to guide instructors and volunteer leaders.
  o Experience respectfully supporting volunteers. 
  o Diplomacy skills to guide instructors, leaders, volunteers, and students of all ages. 
  o Rock solid computer skills including Office 365, Google suite, Salesforce preferred.
  o Exceptional written, oral, interpersonal, and presentation skills.
  o Patience for working with volunteers, and assisting people with all levels of 
     technological experience while providing online support.
  o Excellent communication within staff team required.
Administration:
  o Experience skillfully utilizing spreadsheets.
  o Proven ability to create clear shared documents for multiple applications.
  o Organizational skills to build shared online and physical systems for sharing    information, gear, and materials.
  o Resourceful, organized, great problem solver, and results oriented.
Passion for Outdoor Pursuits and Education:
  o Avid hiker or outdoors-person, preferably with outdoor leadership and trip leading experience. 
  o Wilderness First Aid certification or willingness to obtain.
  o Understand, champion, and follow appropriate outdoor education risk management protocols.
  o Experience developing online learning platforms is desired.
  o Experience leading and/or teaching in outdoor settings is a plus.
Flexibility
  o Willingness to be flexible with changing conditions and program demands.
  o Desire to work in an office setting that supports outdoor pursuits.
  o Frequent weekend and evening work is required.
  o Energetic, flexible, collaborative, punctual, and proactive; a coordinator who is nimble and eager to serve and learn from experienced       volunteers!
Cultural Awareness:
  o Experience working respectfully with colleagues and students from a variety of ages, cultural, and economic backgrounds.
  o Understanding and application of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion principles and interest in furthering this work personally and within       the organization.
  o Commitment to expanding access, relevance, and belonging for traditionally underrepresented groups in the outdoors.
  o Experience with or strategies for recruiting volunteers that represent these communities. 
 
Preferred Competencies
Technical Outdoor Skills
  o Strong technical experience and working knowledge of CMC’s core activities: hiking, 
     climbing, ice climbing, mountaineering, and skiing. 
  o AMGA certifications (SPI) or equivalent competency is a plus but not necessary.
  o Wilderness First Responder certification or higher medical knowledge is also a plus.
Spanish Language Skills
  o Preference for Bi-lingual Spanish Speaking
 
Compensation and Benefits:
CMC will offer the successful candidate a competitive compensation and benefits package, comparable to a nonprofit our size. Salary range for this position is $35,000 - $45,000/year for full-time 40 hours/week (dependent on experience). Current budget allows for $35,000-$38,000 to start.

Wilderness Stewardship Fellow

Position Location: Gunnison, CO

Colorado Mountain Club is accepting applications for a Wilderness Stewardship Fellow position in the Gunnison District of the GMUG National Forest. The CMC Steward will utilize CMC’s RIMS mobile app to collect data on visitor use to support Gunnison District in inventorying and monitoring opportunities for solitude in the district’s Fossil Ridge Wilderness. Each assessment will include GPS coordinates, metrics on the type of visitor use, and photos. The position will collect data on the visitor use, and opportunities for solitude while recreating and camping in the Wilderness area. The position will recruit, train and engage volunteers and coordinate volunteer service projects. 

Applicants should have a strong desire to actively engage in a conservation-focused program that will train, challenge and support participants’ growth and development in their pursuit of meaningful careers in the conservation field. The position will be directly trained and supervised by Forest Service personnel.

Position Responsibilities

  • Utilize CMC’s RIMS mobile app for inventorying and monitoring visitor use.
  • Recruit, engage and train volunteers and coordinate volunteer service projects.
  • Coordinate logistics with land management agency personnel.
  • Positively interact with all user groups of public lands throughout the region.
  • Communicate with agency personnel, CMC staff, project partners and volunteers in a timely manner.
  • Efficiently complete trail and conservation projects in a variety of environmental conditions, including adverse weather and terrain.
  • Complete paperwork assigned by agency personnel and CMC staff.
  • Compile reports of the RIMS data collected.
  • Utilize and engage in USFS and CMC risk management strategies.

Qualifications

  • Physically fit and able to work long days in adverse conditions.
  • Excellent organization skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as a team member.
  • Capacity to professionally communicate in complex situations.
  • Ability to adapt and adjust to changing work conditions and/or priorities.
  • Good driving record must hold a valid driver’s license and have a personal vehicle for work travel (mileage will be reimbursed at the rate of $0.57/mile).
  • Frequently required to walk, sit, talk and listen.
  • Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 60 pounds.
  • Ability to hike in steep, rugged and remote terrain up to 15 miles per day.
  • Must be able to speak, understand, read and write English.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with conservation work such as trail work, restoration work, etc.
  • Wilderness medicine training.
  • Experience teaching, facilitating and team-building with diverse groups of people.
  • Participation in outdoor activities, work, lifestyle and/or pursuits.
  • Knowledge of land management agencies operations and expectations.
  • Bachelor’s degree and/or college coursework with a focus on natural resources.

Time Commitment & Compensation

  • Pay: $18/hour
  • Program Duration: *Seasonal*, 12 weeks of work, June through September 2022.
  • Project Staging Area: GMUG -Gunnison Ranger District
  • Project Locations: Fossil Ridge Wilderness
  • Hours: 40/week (field-based)
  • Work environment: 100% outdoor, field-based work with exposure to remote work and camp locations, inclement weather, and extensive physical work duties. Worksites are frequently in the backcountry and may require backpacking into the worksite. This position will focus primarily on completing solitude monitoring, including camping.
  • Status: Position(s) will remain open until filled.
