This course teaches participants the skills needed to safely hike and climb mountains up to 14,000 feet elevation in most weather conditions.
This course is typically taught in the spring and summer starting in April with lectures and field trips that are completed by the end of May. It is demand-based and not taught every year. At the end of the course, students must schedule and complete a climb sometime between June and August.

The Basic Mountaineering Course is designed to provide you with the knowledge and skills to safely engage in basic mountaineering and begin a life-long learning adventure in the mountains of Colorado and the world. The cost of the five-week course is $150. A check for $50 is required with your application to hold your spot in the class. The final check for $100 is required on April 30th, the night of the first class. To attend the course, you must be a current CMC Member and you must have a current First Aid Certification.
The course consists of lectures followed by fieldwork, where you are able to practice what you learned in the classroom. Subjects taught in the classroom include knots, rope-handling, harnesses, belays, rock climbing techniques, rappelling, mountain first aid, high altitude climbing, basic snow & glacier travel, and equipment. Fieldwork includes basic rock techniques, belaying, rappelling, climbing safety, a multi-pitch climb, a snow day, a high peak route-finding/snow climb, and a high peak overnight.
The lectures will start promptly at 6:00 pm and generally end by 9:00. The scheduled lecture dates are Apr 30, May 7, May 14, May 21, and May 28. The scheduled field dates are somewhat weather dependent. While we expect to conduct the fieldwork on the Saturday following the lecture, weather may force a rescheduling to the Sunday. The two high peak climbs will be scheduled by the senior instructor in coordination with their students for dates in June, July and/or August.
Please note that the class size will be limited. Those wishing to participate need to get the application completed and sent in as the class will be filled based on the date the application is received. Also note the requirement that CMC Membership and First Aid Certification is required prior to the first lecture, April 30.
