Field Day at Winter Park, May 7, all day starting early



Overview:



This class is a follow up to Intermediate Snow and covers technical skills you need to climb steep snow couloirs. It is offered as part of the Alpine Climbing School "Modular" track.  Click here to learn more about climbing classes at the CMC.



Prerequisites for this class are:




  • Basic Climbing or Basic Climbing Equivalency

  • Intermediate Snow.



Important Note: If you plan on completing Alpine Climbing School, In addition to the field day, you will be required to do a snow climb field trip. These snow climbs do not have fixed dates but there will be several in the CMC calendar. You will sign up for these trips just as you do for any CMC trip.



Skills Covered:




  • Ascending and Descending Steep Snow 

  • Belaying techniques for snow

  • Snow Anchors



We will not cover Avalanche Awareness; there is a separate course on this topic.

We will not cover glacier travel and crevasse rescue; there are separate classes on these topics.



Required Equipment: 




  • Clothing and equipment for winter conditions.

  • Mountaineering boots

  • Climbing helmet

  • Climbing harness 

  • Belay device: Black Diamond ATC Guide, Petzl Reverso, or equivalent

  • Ice axe with leash: Double runner with carabiner, or commercial bungee leash. No wrist attached leashes.     

  • Crampons 

  • Snowshoes might be required, depending on conditions

  • Gaiters (recommended)

  • The 10 Essentials



CMC can provide ice axes and crampons but you are encouraged to bring your own

Notes

Attendance/Completion Policy
Students must attend all lectures and field days to receive credit for completing the course. Students will not be allowed to continue beyond a missed lecture/field day. Students must also demonstrate mastery of the both the prerequisites and the skills taught in the immediate class. If such mastery cannot be demonstrated, the student will be asked to repeat the course. If a student cannot demonstrate mastery of the prerequisites the student will not be allowed to continue in the class. Note that classes sometimes show "Sessions"; Basic Climbing Session A, for example. Sessions are simply alternate dates of the same class. In other words, you may choose Session A or Session B, depending on which dates work best for you. You do not have to complete both Session A and Session B.

Cancellation Policy:
Classes must have minimum four students signed up and requisite number of instructors. If either number is too low class may be cancelled.
