Overview:



This class is an introduction to snow travel with a view toward alpine climbing. It may be taken as a stand-alone class, or as part of the Alpine Climbing School "Modular" track.  Click here to learn more about climbing classes at the CMC.



This is not a beginner level course. Prerequisite for this class is Wilderness Trekking School or equivalent experience, and proficiency in crossing snow fields, including use of an ice axe and self-arrest.



Learning Outcomes: 




  • Gear: clothing, ice axe, crampons.

  • How to ascend, traverse and descend snow with and without crampons.

  • French, German, and American crampon techniques.

  • Various ice axe grips and swings, depending on slope.

  • Walking in balance and the rest step.

  • Kicking steps and chopping steps.

  • Self-belay and self-arrest.

  • Glissading.



We will not cover Avalanche Awareness; there is a separate course on this topic.



Required Equipment: 




  • Clothing and equipment for winter conditions.

  • Mountaineering boots

  • Climbing helment

  • Harness

  • Ice axe with leash: Double runner with carabiner, or commercial bungee leash. No wrist attached leashes. 

  • Crampons 

  • Snowshoes might be required, depending on considtions

  • Gaiters (recommended)

  • The 10 Essentials



CMC can provide ice axes and crampons but you are encouraged to bring your own

Notes

Attendance/Completion Policy
Students must attend all lectures and field days to receive credit for completing the course. Students will not be allowed to continue beyond a missed lecture/field day. Students must also demonstrate mastery of the both the prerequisites and the skills taught in the immediate class. If such mastery cannot be demonstrated, the student will be asked to repeat the course. If a student cannot demonstrate mastery of the prerequisites the student will not be allowed to continue in the class. Note that classes sometimes show "Sessions"; Basic Climbing Session A, for example. Sessions are simply alternate dates of the same class. In other words, you may choose Session A or Session B, depending on which dates work best for you. You do not have to complete both Session A and Session B.

Cancellation Policy:
Classes must have minimum four students signed up and requisite number of instructors. If either number is too low class may be cancelled.
