All classroom content will be provided by AIARE through webinars and videos.  Students will be ablel to complete self-paced learning modules with quizzes.  All on-line work must be completed prior to attending field days.

All field days held at backcountry locations for which permits have been granted CMC by USFS.

Instruction by: CMC Level 1 Certified Instructors and Karin Pocock, AIARE Course Leader
Field Instructors include  Senior CMC AIARE Level 1 Instructors and assistants.  Field instructors will travel on skis,, split board and snowshoes.

Field Ratio of Instructors to Students: 1-6

Daily debriefs are held for each field session and are an integral component of the course.

Equipment:  Students must own or rent avalanche  locator beacon/shovel/probe.  Commercial retail outlets rent this equipment if students do not own.

Travel Mode:  Skis or Snowboard - students must be able to ski comfortably at High End of Moderate (Blue) Terrain.

The BIG PROBLEM  encountered each session is STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH BACKCOUNTRY SKIING AND SKINNING.  Downhill skiing and backcountry skiing are not the same.  If you have new equipment or are not proficient in the backcountry, rent snowshoes.  The field content is the same no matter what travel mode is used.

Snowshoe Travel - students must be able to travel with full packs, using poles with snow baskets

Experience:  Map Reading is critical to this school as students will be selecting travel routes in avalanche terrain

Classroom:  The AIARE 100-page Student Manual will be provided electronically closer to the field days.
